“When you’re in the business of saving lives, you have lost the right to be unfit.”
I read this sentence recently in a letter I received from Fire Chief Jim Sideras, welcoming myself and 14 other recruits to the Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue. (To listen to the story of how and why I’m adding a second career to my plate, click HERE.) He was talking about the need for us as fire fighters to be in good physical shape since we will be directly involved with saving people’s lives.
When I read that sentence, I couldn’t help but think of the implications that has on those of us as pastors who are not only involved with people’s physical lives, but spiritual matters as well. We have been called by Jesus to join him in his mission of seeking and saving lost SOULS! How much more important is it for us to maintain fitness in our lives so that we’re ready and able to perform the task at hand.
In this podcast episode, I list 5 specific areas that we as pastors need to take care of our fitness:
- Time spent in the presence of God.
- Mental (Personal Growth)
- Physical fitness
