Have you ever wondered why some churches grow while other churches shrivel and die? Much has been written over the years about various “methods” and “strategies” for how to grow the Church of Jesus Christ. Let me admit something to you: “I am NOT an expert in church growth methods and strategies.” Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, however, I would like to share with you a message that has proven to be very effective for growing The RESCUE Church which God called my wife and I to plant and lead since 2004. We have boldly proclaimed this six-point message in many different forms and fashions over the past seven years of our church-planting adventure and it never ceases to produce a harvest of spiritual fruit that has resulted in a healthy, growing church.
Here’s the message:
God created the world and everything in it. He called it “good”. It was perfect.
Of all God’s creation, man was the pinnacle. God made man for friendship with Himself. God and man were at peace and in right relationship with one another.
Sin and death entered the human race when Adam and Eve, deceived by Satan, made a willful choice to disobey God. As a result every human being born into the world since is hard-wired with a sinful nature that desires to live independently of God and we are all deserving of eternal separation from God in hell (a truth many churches choose not to preach anymore).
Prompted by His incredible love for us, God sent His Son Jesus Christ into our world to be born of a virgin, live a sinless and perfect life, and ultimately give up His life on a cross as Jesus paid the penalty for all of our sins.
Eternal life is a gift God desires to give everyone who: a) admits that they have sinned against God; b) believes that Jesus died for their sins, was buried, and conquered death by rising from the grave; and c) calls upon the name of Jesus, asking for His forgiveness and inviting Him into their life.
Life transformation is a natural byproduct of a believer’s faith in and relationship with Jesus Christ. Our good works are the result, NOT the cause, of our salvation. We don’t do moral and religious things for the sake of earning God’s favor; our lives undergo authentic, radical transformation as we surrender our agendas, dreams, passions, and resources to the King of all kings.
And that’s the message. It’s the G-O-S-P-E-L!
Pastors and church leaders, are you proclaiming that message on a very regular basis from your pulpits? If not, how about giving it a try this Sunday? If you’re not willing to bring that message then might I ask what on earth are you doing in the ministry in the first place? I can assure you that you have NOT been called by God to lead and pastor a church if you’re unwilling to deliver that message boldly and consistently to a lost and dying world!
Church members and attenders, are you hearing this message on a very regular basis from your pastor and spiritual leaders? If not…are you ready for this…IT’S TIME TO FIND A NEW CHURCH!!! A church that is obediently following Christ’s command to proclaim the gospel. I can’t begin to count how often I’ve heard someone say something like this to me after I have preached that message, “Pastor, I’ve sat in church my entire life and never once have I heard that message.” Unbelievable.
Pastors, do you want to see your church grow? Give ‘em the GOSPEL!
This Easter our church held two worship services in which the gospel message was shared boldly, lovingly, and without apologies. (To listen to the message click here.) Of the 241 people in attendance, we are praising God for the 11 souls who made a decision to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior!
And the church keeps on growing…
