“I will build my Church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” – Jesus of Nazareth
God is doing something amazing in Garretson, SD. It is a small town that many churches overlook; I have heard many people call it a bedroom community since it is so close to Brandon, SD and Sioux Falls, SD. Yet, there are people who need hope in Garretson. There are people who, at this moment, are on their way to Hell. People who have never heard the Gospel clearly presented. People that Jesus loves enough to literally die for.
Jesus is building His Church in Garretson and I have the awesome privilege of watching and participating in His work!
I was hired on at the Rescue Church mid-December for two days a week. The vast majority of my time in the office that month was learning my campus pastor position in Flandreau. I hardly spent any time working on planting the Rescue Church in Garretson. To be honest, I was pretty discouraged. I was given the task of gathering together a core group of people to launch the church. There were many obstacles with planting in Garretson but one kept poking its ugly head at me – I knew virtually no one in Garretson!
I started sending out messages/e-mails/phone calls in the beginning of January. To my surprise, many people were receptive and interested in this “new church” coming to their community. I was able to meet with quite a few people for lunch. But, it seemed that it was going to stay at just that – a few people.
On February 10th, we held an informational meeting in Garretson at Anne’s Coffeehouse. Honestly, I would have been happy if 10 people from Garretson showed up and expressed interest in being part of the core launch team. God exceeded my expectations (Ephesians 3:20-21!); we had around twenty people from the community come! We were able to serve them supper and tell them about the vision of the Rescue Church. There was also a time at the end for questions; every single question was solid and thought-provoking.
As of today, there are seventeen people interested in launching the Rescue Church in Garretson. I have also been in discussion with the people who may, God-willing, be leading the worship team and Rescue Kidz ministry.
To summarize what is happening in Garretson – Jesus is building His Church. It’s not about me. It’s not about the Rescue Church. It’s about Him and advancing His mission – to seek and to save that which is lost (Luke 19:10)!
Although Jesus is the one building the Church, He uses regular people like us. If you are interested in getting involved and helping launch the Rescue Church in Garretson, I encourage you to contact me but I want to be honest up-front about some things.
It will be hard, discouraging, and painful.
At times you will want to quit.
Yet, it is at these times – when we come to the end of ourselves – that we cry out to God and He does something so awe-inspiring that there is no way it could be attributed to us. It won’t be easy but it will be rewarding.
Lives will be transformed. Marriages will be saved. God will be glorified.
