I read a passage of Scripture today that spoke directly to where I’m at in life right now.
In 1 Corinthians 16:9 the apostle Paul writes, “…a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.”
Good news. Bad news. The good news is that God is leading me to lead our church family into a new and exciting chapter of growth as we follow the vision he has birthed in my heart for planting churches in rural communities across South Dakota. The bad news is that just on the other side of any open door of opportunity awaits opposition. Anywhere God’s kingdom is surging forward…anywhere people’s lives are being radically transformed by the power of Jesus Christ…the kingdom of darkness is also lurking just below the surface, laying wait in the shadows, seeking to discourage, depress, derail, or dismantle God’s work. Sometimes the opposition comes in the form of physical sickness, financial setbacks, or other circumstances beyond our control. Other times opposition comes in the form of people. Sometimes those people are on the “outside”. Sometimes those people come from “within”. As we prepare for an exciting launch into a risky, unknown, yet inviting future I’m sure the opposition is gearing up as well. As we ready ourselves to charge through the open door of opportunity in red-hot pursuit of the vision God has called us to I know the enemy is close at hand. But today I claim Christ’s promise about his Church:
“…I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it.” – Matthew 16:18
What door of opportunity is opening in your life today? What promise will you claim as you boldy step through that door head long into the face of very real (but already defeated) opposition?
