Why is that Pastor Getting Soaked with a Garden Hose?

When was the last time you were at a church and saw the pastor step out during the worship set only to come on stage a few moments later soaking wet to preach his message?  Well that’s what happened a few weeks ago at The RESCUE Church!  What’s that all about you’re wondering.  Let me set it up for you this way before I explain the rest of the story:

One thing we value at The RESCUE Church is creativity.  We serve a creative God.  He loves variety.  He loves one part of His created splendor being different from another.  We can see this evidence all around us in the diverse and amazing creation He has made.  So then let me pose a question to you:

If God is so extremely creative, why are most of His churches so extremely NOT creative?  Why do most churches do the SAME thing week in and week out?  Why, instead of being embraced, is change more often fought in the local church?  Why is it common for church attenders to never see a change in scenery from one week to the next?  Why do church leaders insist on conducting every detail  of the worship service in the exact same order as we did last week…as we did last year…as we did 30 years ago?  Bottom line:  Why is it not normal for churches to intentionally think through HOW they are going to present God’s TIMELESS and UNCHANGING truth to people in a new, fresh, and creative way that will engage their senses and drive home the message?

I am so blessed to lead a church that is daring enough to be creative!  The RESCUE Church has an amazing staff and creativity team that works along side of me to continually think of new ways to bring creative elements into our worship experiences.  Whether it’s coming up with a video clip, message illustration, visual prop, song, stage design, drama, graphic, or some other creative element, this team strives to keep things fresh.  One thing that our attenders will find predictable from one week to the next is that nothing is predictable!  We are very intentional about doing whatever it takes to present God’s Word in such a way that people will not soon forget what they saw and heard in church last weekend!  We love to keep people guessing with anticipation, “What’s going to happen this weekend at church?”

So that’s why my creative team decided that when it came time to preach a message on baptism (a message that many in our church have heard before) I should come out on stage soaking wet.  Did I love the idea?  Not at first.  Afterall, I had to do this twice in one weekend!  But I had to admit that it was creative…so I went with it!  I’m not saying this is the best idea we’ve ever had.  Just one of hopefully countless more outside-the-box approaches we come up with to keep driving home unchanging truth in ever-changing ways!

If you’d like to share some of your creative ideas with us, we’d love to hear from you!

  • To all my readers: I was informed that a youtube video box is coming up at the bottom of this post on some of your computers. Please know that I did not put that in the blog so I claim no responsibility for whatever content may show. Our other home computer has been infected with spyware and this youtube video DOES show up when I access my blog from there. Not sure what that’s all about, but I just wanted to let you all know that the desired content of my blog was only the text and picture at the top of the post.
